Osun APC's Silence on New Minimum Wage Sparks Concern

Osun APC's Silence on New Minimum Wage Sparks Concern

By Oluwaseun Olamiposi Arewa

The recent announcement of a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 for Osun State workers by Governor Ademola Adeleke has been widely celebrated by the workforce and citizens alike. However, the conspicuous silence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State regarding this significant development has left many puzzled, raising questions about the party's responsiveness and commitment to workers' welfare.

As a principal player in the state’s political landscape, it is reasonable to expect the APC to issue a public statement commending the governor for this progressive policy while outlining their own perspective on the welfare of workers. Instead, their lack of response has created an air of indifference, which could be misinterpreted as a lack of concern for the well-being of the state’s labour force.

The people of Osun State deserve clarity from the APC. An informed and constructive engagement with the government on this matter would not only demonstrate the party’s alignment with the aspirations of workers but also reaffirm its relevance as a credible opposition. A statement addressing their stance would help articulate why they remain a viable option for voters who prioritize policies that enhance worker welfare.

Governor Adeleke’s approval of the minimum wage underscores his administration’s focus on improving the lives of public servants. This move sets a benchmark that calls for healthy political discourse and collaboration. The APC, as a responsible opposition, should seize this opportunity to engage constructively and propose complementary or alternative policies that further benefit the state.

The current silence from the APC leadership risks being interpreted as a missed opportunity to align with the workers’ aspirations and contribute meaningfully to public discourse. Breaking this silence with a clear and constructive position will not only elevate the party’s standing but also strengthen its connection with the electorate.

As the citizens of Osun State celebrate this progressive development, they also await a thoughtful and transparent response from the APC. The APC’s silence on the new minimum wage presents an opportunity for introspection and recalibration. By breaking this silence with a clear, well-thought-out response, the party can reassert its relevance and demonstrate its commitment to participatory governance.

Active participation on issues of public interest is essential for any political party aspiring to lead. The ball is now in APC court to rise to the occasion if indeed they are ready to reclaim the state as envisage come next electoral dispensation, then they should seize this fresh opportunity to come out and prove their commitment to the people they seek to serve. The people of Osun State deserve nothing less than active, transparent, and accountable leadership from all political actors.

Once again, Hearty Congratulations to all Osun state workforce.

E-Signed,

Comrade Oluwaseun Olamiposi Arewa.
